OpenJDK and Oracle JDK Licensing Changes

Free to Use and Redistribute

Oracle has changed the licensing terms for Java Development Kit (JDK) versions 15 and later, making them free to use and redistribute for both commercial and non-commercial purposes. This is a significant change from previous versions, which required a commercial license for commercial use. The change applies to both Oracle JDK and OpenJDK, the open-source implementation of Java.

Impact on Developers and Businesses

The new licensing terms will provide greater flexibility and cost savings for developers and businesses. They can now use and redistribute JDKs without having to worry about licensing fees or restrictions. This will make it easier for businesses to develop and deploy Java applications, and it will encourage the adoption of Java in new areas.

Continued Support for Oracle JDK

Oracle plans to continue providing support for both Oracle JDK and OpenJDK. Oracle JDK will still be available as a commercial product with additional features and support, while OpenJDK will remain free and open source. This will give developers the option to choose the JDK that best meets their needs and budget.
